Message Two
The voters of the Town of Orient voted on November 4, 2008 NOT TO JOIN the proposed REGIONAL SCHOOL UNIT (RSU) and it has been reported that 2/3 of the 27 towns that would have made up the proposed RSU also voted against the proposd consolidation. Nobody knows what will happen next.
Message One
Regarding the recent increase in the Orient Mil Rate and the resulting increase in the 2008 Real Estate Taxes in Orient,
the Tax Collector writes:Explanation of Mil rate Increase
Yes the mil rate did increase. There were some expenditures that could not be avoided. The municipal office needed to be insulated , since the fuel cost rocketed this would be cost effective. The cost of Salt for the roads went from approx.$ 4800. - $999.98 this year and this was a bid process, so this was the lowest price. We also have the School consolidation on the table , and the final figures and rules were put off for another 6 months ,but in the meantime our surplus that off sets the taxes was used last year so the RSU [regional school unit] could not absorb these funds and this meant the town had to raise the whole amount at budget time.. In a nutshell, until we know what the outcome is for the consolidation( which is a bad thing for small towns like ours) our board will try not to let mil rate go any higher, and since it went down for the last 5 years, they would like to get it back to a lower rate for next year. The are no more foreseeable projects that would cause a increase.
I hope this helped , if not please do not hesitate to contract the Board of selectmen @ the next meeting on 11/17/08 @ 11:30 a.m.
