The Orient Reclamation Center - Transfer Station
The Town of Orient Reclamation Center is located on the west side of U. S. Route 1, just north of the power line and immediately north of the power line service road. All persons depositing items at the Orient Transfer Station must display an official Orient Transfer Station Tag...all items deposited must have been generated within the Town of Orient.The Reclamation Center supervisor is:

Starting in April 2010, the Orient Town Selectmen have initiated a PASS procedure wherein all who use the Orient Transfer Station must show a valid TRANSFER STATION PASS. One Pass will be given to each residence and additional passes may be purchased for each resident. ONLY solid waste generated in the Town of Orient may be disposed of at the Orient Transfer Station. A schedule of fees for large items and regulated waste has been approved and is available at the Transfer Station and at the Town Office.

Unless a valid sticker is attached to your freon-containing appliance by a Certified Refrigeration Mechanic, there is a charge of:
$25.00 to deposit refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners (freon compressors)
$18.00 to deposit appliances with freon compressors if an appropriate sticker has been affixed to it by a certified mechanic.Rubber tires are accepted but must have had the steel wheel removed. $2.00 for each tire up to 16" radius or $3.00 for tires up to 24 " radius.
Fees for other items are listed on forms available at the Transfer Station or at the Town Office.
Wood products are accepted to be burned but must NOT contain nor be encumbered with any roofing, sheetrock or other non-combustable materials.
Only SOLID refuse generated in Orient may be deposited at the Orient Transfer Station.

GENERAL WASTE
1 — Burn Areas
Everything that is authorized as being burnable should be put on one of the burning pads enclosed by the three - 3 foot concrete walls: wood or lumber with any metal such as nails in one and natural wood and brush in the other.
PROHIBITED from burning: painted wood, plastics, roofing materials, chemicals, rubber, foam, synthetic materials, gypsum wallboard/sheetrock and pressure treated (green stained) lumber. Remove all traces of sheetrock from studs, etc. Unpainted construction waste must be stripped to its natural state...or it is not acceptable.
Materials prohibited from being burned should be put in the dumpster under the roof (see #3, below)2 — Compactor

Non-burnable items including: roofing materials, furniture, large plastic items, foam rubber, coated wire, painted, laminated and pressure-treated lumber - Posted fees for heavy items apply4 — Transfer Station Building
Fluorescent Ballasts, Fluorescent light Bulbs, Mercury vapor lamps, Televisions, computer monitors and microwave ovens must be placed inside the back of the Transfer Station shed for storage - Posted fees apply5 — Dumpster for Metal — See the Attendant.
Scrap metal, steel vehicle wheels, metal pipe and aluminum may be placed inside the roll-off container.White goods including stoves, clothes washers & driers and other metal cabinets are accepted.- Posted fees apply
6 — Household Items containing Freon or other gases
Accepted upon payment of a fee - See the Attendant.
Air Conditioners and Refrigerators, - A fee of $25.00 must be paid for each of the following items: each AC with a compressor containing Freon gas; each refrigerator with a compressor unless it has been emptied by a refrigerator technician and a sticker has been attached.
So that children can’t be trapped inside, refrigerator doors and freezer doors must be removed from the box . . . freezer drawers must be separated from the box and placed in the appropriate receptacle for metal or plastic.7 — Rubber Tires - See the Attendant.
Rubber tires MUST be removed from their metal wheels which may be placed in the dumpster for metals. - Posted fees apply
CONSTRUCTION (and demolition) WASTE
Truckloads of construction and demolition waste are accepted but fees apply depending on the amount of waste dumped - see the Town Clerk for information about the disposal of construction and decontruction waste and demolition permits required by Planning Board Regulations.
Regarding Chemicals, Liquids and Hazardous Waste
Liquid Waste is not accepted.Paint & Varnish - Remove the lid at home, let dry to a hard state, re-cover the can and place in the open non-crusher dumpster under the roof.
Other chemicals and all other hazardous waste including but not limited to toxic liquids, engine oil, cooking oil and household chemicals are not accepted.
Batteries are accepted — recycle automotive batteries, dry cell batteries, rechargable batteries through Walmart or VIP or other sellers - Posted fees apply
Propane gas bottles and canisters are not accepted.Asbestos, Medical Waste, Dead Animals, Contaminated Soil, Industrial and Commercial Agricultural Waste is NOT ACCEPTED!

Orient Selectpersons
Three resident Selectmen govern the Town of Orient. Each Selectman is currently elected to a three year term and each term is staggered, thus one Selectman is elected every year while the other two continue the remaining year(s) in their term. In addition to Selectmen's duties each Selectman serves the town as a Tax Assessor, as an Overseer of the Poor and as a Road Commissioner.
The regularily scheduled Selectmen’s Meeting is (usually) during the second Tuesday of each month and (usually) at 5:00 PM. The day and time will be announced and posted at the Town Office Bulletin Board along with an agenda and Warrant seven days in advance of the scheduled meeting.Compensation for each Selectman's position is $1,500.00 per year based on attendance at 12 Monthly Meetings. Payment is monthly if the selectman attends that month's meeting..

This position is not a paid Orient position and Shoreland Zoning in Orient is under the jurisdiction of the Northern Maine Regionional Office of the Bureau of Land and Water Quality, Maine Department of Environmental Protection.Shoreland Zone Regulations which are imposed by the State of Maine are in effect in the Town of Orient. All construction within the Shoreland Zone (within 250 feet from the normal high water mark) requires a permit. Construction in wetlands also requires permitted approval. If the gates don't work properly, authorized credential holders should press the silver button on the RPEP kiosk under the portico to state their need to the CBP Officer who answers...speak directly and loudly into the microphone.

PortPASS/CanPASS Credentials to enter either country at unattended ports during "closed" hours are no longer honored by the United States but are still being honored by Canada but ONLY at the Port of Fosterville. The privileges granted by this program are moot, however, when the US Border Ports are unoccupied and the gates are closed as passage in either direction is prohibited, except for emergencies. Since July 27, 2009, travelers leaving Forest City, Maine may NOT enter Canada after 4:00 PM and before 8:00 AM ET daily even if they possess CanPASS Credentials.
Remote Port Entry Program (RPEP) credential holders may enter and leave the US when the border ports at Orient and Forest City ME are closed and abandoned.

is open 7:00 AM until 11:00 PM ET daily (8:00 AM to Midnight Atlantic Time) between May 15th and November 30th.
Between November and mid-May, the Fosterville Border Office opens at 9:00 am closes at 5:00 pm Atlantic Time
(i.e., 8:00 to 4:00 Eastern Standard Time)...Sunday thru Friday. The Fosterville Port is open on Saturdays from 8:00 am thru midnight, Atlantic Time (that's 8:00 am to 11:00 pm Eastern Time) Year RoundPortPASS/CanPASS Credentials to enter either country at unattended ports during "closed" hours are no longer honored by the United States but are still being honored by Canada but only at Fosterville. The privileges granted by this program are useful when the US Border Gates are still open and Canada Customs have closed, e.g. 4:00 ET through 5:00 ET during the winter. When the US gates are closed, passage in either direction is prohibited (to all but RPEP credential holders) except for emergencies. Except for EMERGENCIES, only holders of RPEP credental holders are allowed passage into the USA when that port is closed and abandoned.

The Ports of Houlton / Woodstock and Vanceboro / St. Croix are open 24 hours a day, year around.
If you find the need to make an EMERGENCY CROSSING of the border from Canada into the United States at the Orient/Fosterville Port or at the FC,NB/FC,ME port when either US port is closed and abandoned, it would be prudent to phone the Houlton Port at 207-532-2131 before crossing or as soon thereafter as possible.
When all four US and Canada Remote Ports are closed, Remote Port Entry Program (RPEP) credential holders may enter the USA and although they may leave the USA, they must have valid authorization to enter Canada when that port is closed and abandoned. Existing CanPASS credentials are currently honored by Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) provided that the user's CanPass Card has been entered to the electronics at the specific port to be entered.

The "Field Offices" of both the CBP and the CBSA are the only official locations at which travellers are allowed to enter each country. Except under only a few limited conditions, travellers may not enter either the USA or Canada at any location other than via an esablished "Port of Entry." Crossing these friendly borders BETWEEN official Ports of Entry is prohibited and when prosecuted, the offense carries a heavy fine. CBP and CBSA Officers may NOT authorize such entries even into their own country. To prevent unauthorized border crossings, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are charged with interdicting and apprehending travellers who illegally enter Canada and officers from the Office of Border Patrol are charged with interdicting and apprehending travellers who illegally enter the USA.
Only qualified NEXUS and Canadian Border Boat Landing Program (CBBLP or I-68) credential holders may enter the USA without reporting personally at a recognized and established Port of Entry. Certain other reporting requirements apply when those credential holders do enter the USA by boat. Such credentials are available to trusted US and Canadian citizens.
